Every Big Goal Starts With a Risk
Looking back on my journey from Louisiana to Los Angeles, from Leuzinger High School to Fresno State on a full football scholarship, and then into professional football, one thing has always been true. Nothing meaningful happened without risk.
People often see the results and assume the path was straightforward. But the truth is, every step forward came with uncertainty. Every decision to chase something bigger meant leaving comfort behind.
When I was younger, football was not just a hobby. It was a direction I committed my life to. But even with that commitment, there were always moments where I had to decide if I was willing to take the risk to keep going.
Leaving Comfort Behind Is Never Easy
One of the first real risks I took was leaving home and stepping into a bigger stage in Los Angeles. Playing high school football at Leuzinger meant competing at a higher level and putting myself in an environment where nothing was guaranteed.
That experience prepared me for Fresno State, where I earned a full scholarship. Even then, nothing was promised. I had to compete every day to earn my place. That is the reality of football. You are always one step away from having to prove yourself again.
Each level required me to risk comfort. Comfort is where growth slows down. Risk is where growth begins.
Risk Is Part of Chasing a Dream
When I decided to pursue football beyond college, I understood that I was stepping into uncertainty. Not everyone makes it to the professional level. Not everyone gets the opportunity. And even for those who do, nothing is guaranteed.
But I also knew that staying in one place would mean I never fully explored what I was capable of.
Chasing the NFL dream meant putting everything on the line. Time, energy, focus, and belief. It meant accepting that failure was possible, but so was success.
That is what risk really is. It is choosing possibility over safety.
Fear Is Normal, But It Cannot Lead
I have felt fear at different stages of my journey. Fear of not being good enough. Fear of failure. Fear of making the wrong decision.
That is normal. Anyone who says they do not feel fear when taking risks is not being honest.
The difference is whether fear makes the decision for you.
In football, if you hesitate, you lose the moment. Life is similar. If you wait for everything to feel perfect, you will miss opportunities. Risk requires movement even when you are unsure.
I learned that fear does not go away. You just learn how to move with it instead of letting it stop you.
Growth Only Happens Outside Comfort
Every time I took a risk in my life, I ended up growing in some way. Sometimes it worked out the way I hoped. Sometimes it did not. But I always learned something.
Leaving home. Competing at the college level. Pursuing professional football. Each step pushed me into environments where I had to adapt quickly.
Growth does not happen when everything is familiar. It happens when you are forced to adjust, learn, and rise to a new level of expectation.
That is what risk does. It forces growth.
Not Every Risk Leads to Success
One of the most important truths I learned is that taking risks does not guarantee the outcome you want. My football journey did not turn into a long long-term professional career. That is reality for many athletes.
But that does not mean the risk was wasted.
What matters is that I gave myself the chance to try. I did not stay on the sidelines of my own potential. I stepped into it fully.
Even when things did not go exactly as planned, the experience shaped who I am today. It taught me discipline, resilience, and perspective that I still carry.
Playing It Safe Has Its Own Cost
People often think not taking risks is safer. But I have learned that playing it safe also has a cost.
If you never take chances, you never know what you are capable of. You stay in the same place. You avoid failure, but you also avoid growth.
For me, staying comfortable was never the goal. I wanted to see how far I could go. That required risk.
Looking back, I would rather take risks and learn from them than wonder what could have been if I had not tried at all.
Risk Builds Confidence Over Time
One thing I did not fully understand when I was younger is that risk builds confidence. Every time you take a chance and survive the outcome, you learn something about yourself.
You learn that you can handle uncertainty. You learn that you can recover from setbacks. You learn that you are stronger than you thought.
That confidence does not come from avoiding challenges. It comes from facing them.
Football gave me many moments like that. Moments where I had to trust my preparation and step into pressure. Over time, that builds a belief in yourself that carries into every area of life.
Applying Risk Beyond Sports
Now that I am no longer playing football, I still apply the same mindset to life. Starting new projects, building Help2Others, and exploring new opportunities all involve risk in different forms.
There is always uncertainty when you try something new. There is always a chance things do not go perfectly. But there is also the chance to create something meaningful.
That is what keeps me moving forward.
Final Thoughts
The importance of taking risks to pursue your goals is something I learned through experience, not theory. Football taught me that nothing valuable comes without uncertainty.
Every stage of my journey required me to step into the unknown. Some risks paid off in ways I expected. Others taught me lessons I did not see coming.
But all of them helped shape my path.
If there is one message I would leave behind, it is this. Do not let fear of uncertainty stop you from pursuing what matters to you. Risk is part of growth. And without it, you stay exactly where you are.
